Cross section of obsidian lava outcropping (Tokachi Ishizawa)

This outcrop and the archaeological remains are seen in the region around Yubetsu River and its tributaries in the Shirataki area of Engaru Town. The region is known for the largest obsidian production in Japan and the distribution of archaeological sites from the late Paleolithic period.
