Washinoki Site: Central part of the stone circle (during excavation work)

This stone circle is the largest in Hokkaido and the third largest in Japan. Its structure, stone arrangement and other details are somewhat different from those of stone circles found in the northern Tohoku region. Lack of evidence of earthen pits under the stones, for example, strongly suggests that the stone circle itself was not used as a grave.
